Mission: Media Services For a Future-Oriented Curriculum
The Instructional Materials Centers in the Cedar Rapids Schools exist to support the total educational program. Media Services are provided by certificated media specialists and their secretarial staffs in response to individual building needs.
Goals: The school library media program will:
Enable all students and staff to be effective and discriminating users of ideas and information.
Provide materials and technologies which support the curricular objectives of the school.
Encourage reading and use of a library for lifelong learning.

The Cedar Rapids Community School District Library Media Curriculum is based upon the Iowa Information Literacy Information Framework and the AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner.
The Viola Gibson Library Media Center collection includes over 14,000 books, magazines, videotapes, and professional resources for students, staff, and parents.
The library media center is connected to a 31 station computer lab
and a small, school-wide, student-run broadcast studio.
Students visit the library on a daily basis to read and check-out materials, use the computers, work on research projects, and participate in literature-related lessons.
Preschool: 1 book each visit
Grades K-1: 3 books/magazines
Grades 2-3: 5 books/magazines
Grades 4-5: 7 books/magazines
Families are billed for lost or damaged student books at the end of the school year.
