Our Cedar Rapids Community School District developed a Wellness Policy in accordance with federal law in 2006. In addition, the community of Cedar Rapids is working to become a Blue Zones (Healthy) Community. The District believes we have a responsibility to improve the health and well-being of our children. Research suggests that a healthier school environment can result in greater academic achievement and healthier lives for students and school staff. To make our school environment healthier, our school, along with all other schools in the district formed a School Wellness Committee, in addition to the District Wellness Council.
The individual school wellness committee is responsible for establishing building wellness goals using the Healthy Schools Program. The Healthy Schools Program offers a free, comprehensive toolkit to create a healthier school environment; allows for implementation of the District Wellness Policy goals; and is the program utilized by Blue Zones.
Some of the healthy activities/programs that committee has initiated and promoted:
- 10 week healthy living challenge for students in grades 2, 4, 5
- Blue Zone Designation
- Celebrations without food
- Drop Everything and Dance
- Healthiest State Walk
- Energizers: Brain break physical activities during class time
- Fall Fitness Day
- Food is not used for student rewards
- Jump Rope for Heart
- Mind Up for grade 4
- Nutrition education for grade 2
- On-site Pilates class for staff
- Recess before lunch
- Running Club
- School garden
- Turkey Trot

Presently the committee is comprised of principal, nurse, counselor, instructional coach, classroom teachers and parents. Meetings are held about every 6 weeks during the school year on Mondays or Wednesdays right after school (4:00 PM). Meetings are open to any Gibson parents. We hope to initiate conversation from students to parents about wellness activities taking place at school. If parents have ideas for wellness initiatives at Viola Gibson, we would appreciate any feedback and involvement.
